What Makes It GreatĪnastasia garnered multiple Oscar nominations, and Ryan herself was glowingly singled out for her role, receiving an Annie Award nod for her dynamic vocal portrayal. The enchanting drama features Meg Ryan as the 18-year-old amnesiac Anya (who is actually the Grand Duchess Anastasia), as she joins forces with two con men (John Cusack & Kelsey Grammer) to discover her past and become reunited with her beloved grandmother the Empress. Loosely based on the life and lore of the famous titular Russian royal, the 1997 animated musical fantasy Anastasia provides an alternative look at what could have happened to the prominent daughter of Tsar Nicholas II after her family was brutally executed by Bolshevik revolutionaries in 1918. Alice and Michael's emotional journey provided a poignant look at the effects of alcoholism on not only the addict but also their concerned loved ones, and When a Man Loves a Woman remains an underrated entry in Ryan's stellar acting resume. Ryan was able to show off her dramatic side in the engrossing picture, earning a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her compelling portrayal of the struggling family matriarch. Upon her return home, the pair finds their bond altered as Michael realizes he had been enabling his wife's alcoholism, causing them to address their marriage and what they want for their respective futures. Here are just some reasons her outfits and style of yesteryear are still cause for celebration. In the 1994 romantic drama When a Man Loves a Woman, Meg Ryan and Andy García portrayed married couple Alice and Michael Green, whose relationship is tested by Alice's intense drinking problem that results in the devoted mother and wife entering herself into a rehab clinic to tackle her addiction head-on. She's without a doubt a delight in the rom com category, and her film fashion always made a direct impact on that fun and cheery disposition that she seemed to intrinsically carry. I don't think anyone can think of Meg Ryan without imagining her perkiest of scenes: Her reenactment of faking it in When Harry Met Sally, her crazy Christmas car-singing in Sleepless in Seattle ("Horses, horses, horses."), her cute unawareness of who Joe Fox really is in the coffee shop of You've Got Mail. And personally, I love what Bustle's own James Tison has to say about Ryan: "If Julia Roberts was the mother of all romantic comedies in the ’90s, Meg Ryan was her cute, neurotic sister." Meg Ryan was dubbed as one of "America's Sweethearts" back in the day for all her '90s film glory. And then I took it way back and finally saw When Harry Met Sally, which pretty much changed all of our lives, right? This obviously led to my finally watching You've Got Mail to see her and Tom Hanks in action together once again. It was around that same time, though, that my then boyfriend, now husband, introduced me to a movie he had grown up watching - the classic and timeless '90s rom com Sleepless in Seattle. But despite being late to the party, I've managed to catch up on her talent through the decades. And once you've been introduced, who could ever get over Meg Ryan's fashion in the many films she's starred in? Granted, it wasn't until 2001's Kate and Leopold that I fell in love with her and that she was put on my personal map of Hollywood starlets. It wasn't until my late teens that I discovered the magic of Meg Ryan.
